Branch manager reviews: The Friend by Sigrid Nunez

The Friend by Sigrid Nunez is an interesting look at the nature of grief. It is also very much about relationships. Some of these are between teacher and student. Others are mentor and the mentored. One very important relationship examined is the bond between people and dogs. When the narrator who is grieving after the loss of her friend inherits the friend's giant dog, it complicates her life. But the dog misses his master and together, the narrator and the dog help each other heal. This book isn't traditional. It's challenging in many ways. The story is written as if you are peeking into another person's personal reflections or journal. It brings up many controversial topics. But it will get you thinking. I enjoyed it very much.
